About us

It started in the biscuit aisle.

A toddler who wanted the box with the cartoon on it, and a mother who read the label in the back (and the price tag). Stories on Dough is what came out of that: a one-bench workshop in Lincoln, Canterbury, drawing shapes worth baking.

Christmas Cookie Pizza, a 3D-printed cookie cutter

01 · Our story

The trolley stopped at the biscuit aisle

It stopped there every week. A two-year-old with both hands on a box, because there was a smiling animal printed on the front. On the back of it: palm oil, three different sugars, and a price that would have bought the flour, the butter and the eggs twice over.

So the box went back on the shelf and we made a deal to bake our own. That first batch came out as plain pale rounds. He ate one, politely, and then asked about the box with the animal on it.

The biscuit was never the problem. The shape was.

02 · Our mission

A toddler will not eat a circle to be polite

Give the same child a dinosaur, a star and a heart on one plate and afternoon tea turns into something he can finish. The dinosaur eats the trees. The star gets saved for last. Everything goes, including the wholemeal hiding in it.

That is what we design for now. Shapes with enough character to carry a story, cut deep and clean enough that the character is still there when the tray comes out of the oven.

03 · The recipe

Less sugar, and a dough that holds an edge

A good shape only survives if the dough behaves, and the dough only gets baked if it is something you are happy handing over at three in the afternoon. So the recipe took longer than the first cutter did: a firm chilled dough with a fraction of the sugar, one that keeps a sharp edge instead of spreading into a blob.

It rides along with every order on a card you can splash, because a cutter on its own is only half the answer. It is still the one we bake most weeks.

04 · Who we are

Still the same kitchen

Two of us, a small kitchen and a story to tell. We love cookie cutters that brings our imagination into life. Everything is test-baked by a critic who is 3 now and much harder to impress.

Questions about an order, a custom shape, or a wholesale run: we would love to hear from you.
